Today I want to talk to you about an often forgotten aspect of the happiness equation. Sometimes I think we can get so focused on ‘fixing’ what we deem to be broken that we can forget what the entire purpose is behind our search for success—whatever success may mean! We don’t want to lose weight just because 150 lbs is a prettier number than 200 lbs, have a more positive attitude just because it is more socially acceptable, work hard to pass that exam for the merit badge alone, or seek better health just for the hell of it. No, all of these attributes and the infinite number of other such desirable characteristics that we can come up with are all about feeling happier—happier with who we are, happier with our contribution to life, and happier about the joyful times we can extract out of living.
There is one area that allows me to express my individuality best and that is in the area of creativity. I know there are many who think of creativity as being somewhat synonymous with artistic and musical ability, and while there is of course some overlap, there is much more to the picture. I do believe that one of the highest expressions of human kind is in the expression of our personal creativity—feeling a higher something that speaks through us and assists us in creating something new and unique—and there are many ways we can do this that do not require any artistic or musical ability at all.
Creating Happiness
The creativity I am speaking of can contribute a whole new dimension of happiness to all aspects of your life—work, home and in all degrees of relationships. In business, the clerk in the store can dress up a product display to make it look more exciting, the accountant can find innovative solutions for their client, the school teacher can design a more attractive learning environment for the children, etc. In the personal arena, parents find out-of-the-box solutions for their children’s woes, the couple worn out by the daily grind can find small ways to remind their partner that the love still burns bright, family misunderstandings can be overcome simply by being open to more alternative ways of thinking and so on.
What I do know for a fact is that nothing beats the inner glow that comes from expressing your creativity, in knowing that you have made a difference and that you are leaving your own, very personal, mark on the world. What could you achieve if you allowed your creative side to shine? Would you find your work environment more stimulating, your family life more harmonious, your intimate life more exciting and your individual self more joyous? Would you like to find out?
