Sometimes I write a newsletter and find myself surprised by the specific details that capture the most interest. Last week, my newsletter was about the ways we can limit ourselves with the viewpoints we hold, particularly about aging. Quite frankly, if you believe that old age brings a host of woes, then it is highly likely that that is how the aging process will be for you. On the other hand, if you throw all those ideas out of the window and focus on all you have learned and can therefore expand upon in the upcoming years, then you will drastically improve the quality of your life.
Positive Aging
For me, I have no fear of becoming ‘old’ because I see that as a blessing—I have learned a lot, lived a lot and gained the experience I need to really achieve all of my dreams. If I were the same person I was when I was 26, then these dreams would be way beyond my reach. Sometimes though, it can be difficult to remain positive about aging, especially when we find ourselves surrounded by negativity. As such, whenever we are not working on a specific issue, one of the programs Eldon and I play regularly is Quantum Younging.
Last week, I told you about the owner of Runner’s Soul in Spokane, who had decided he would leave the running to the ‘young folks’ as he was too old for it himself. He was most astounded when he learned that Eldon and I are both runners, in spite of the fact that Eldon is significantly older then he is. And if you need any proof that Eldon and I don’t let age hold us back from following our heart’s desires, just take a look at Eldon’s Facebook page, where I posted pictures from our weekend run—a 12k run with our best personal time!
Slippery Slopes
In my last newsletter, I also mentioned using the Cognitive Enhancement program, and this seemed to garner the most interest—at least judging from the number of questions I had about it. Not long ago, I felt as though I was becoming very forgetful—in fact I felt as though I was becoming too reliably forgetful and I knew that this was a bad slippery slope. Our beliefs are very good at creating self-fulfilling prophecies—if you don’t believe you can remember, then you will not try to remember. If you don’t try to remember details, then your brain will forget how to remember details. This was not acceptable to me, so as soon as I realized I had some of these thought patterns going on, I reached for Eldon’s Cognitive Enhancement InnerTalk program. I must have caught the problem pretty early on as I only had to play it on my desk at work for a week or so before I felt the sharpness returning!
Now, there were two categories of questions I was asked after I mentioned my use of Cognitive Enhancement. The first has to do with specific kinds of thinking ability (“Will it help me remember names . . .or dates . . .etc?”) and the other was to do with degenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s.
Degrees of Remembering
Yes, Cognitive Enhancement does address things like names, dates and places, but even more importantly, it addresses the entire thinking process. It helps you remain relaxed while thinking, to organize your thoughts into meaningful patterns, to pay attention to details, to actually enjoy learning new things and exercising the brain on a regular basis. The affirmations also address the fear that comes with the very thought of declining mental faculties—the very fear that can exacerbate the problems. I do know that as I used the program, I found my own self-talk changing and my thinking became clearer!
When it comes to conditions such a senility or Alzheimer’s, I have to tell you that I do not know how effective the program would be. That said, if I knew of someone with this kind of condition, I most certainly would get them this program. A few weeks ago, Eldon interviewed Dick Swaab on his Provocative Enlightenment radio show, and because I found the interview so fascinating, I decided to read Prof. Swaab’s book, We Are Our Brains. I am still working my way through this book, but one of the repeating patterns I am seeing is the way brain processes are heavily influenced by our environment and stress, and how these can create more significant (sometime permanent) problems. The most important thing I have learned so far from the book is the importance of taking care of our brains and this includes the thoughts we put into it. The more you can exercise the brain, believe in your brains ability to function optimally, and take positive steps to reduce the stress you are under, the better your chances are at slowing down or maybe even reversing the degenerative process. At least, that is how I see it based on what I have read. All of this is addressed in Cognitive Enhancement so what is there to lose by trying it? That said, our best program for overall mental training is Smart and Sharp. This is something I believe everyone can benefit from as it is our most complete mind-training program.
