We must all be salespeople in order to succeed. Everyone is in the business of selling themselves every day. We all sell ourselves whenever we put our best foot forward. We did some selling to our spouses. We sold ourselves every time we got a job. Indeed, the largest difference between a rich salesperson and a poor one is in what they sell.
Stereotypes
Most people do not believe they can sell. They think of selling as something “blue suede shoe” people do. They conjure up old stereotypes of the traveling salesman or the high-pressure car salesperson. To some, sales is a dirty word.
Yet we are all selling something nearly all the time. Sometimes we sell our opinions and ideas, sometimes we sell the things we simply believe in. Sales make things happen! Cash registers ring only when sales or refunds happen. The world is dependent on sales. The economy would entirely collapse if there were no salespeople. Indeed, probably the most secure profession in the world is that of the professional salesperson!
A Matter of Sales
Selling is really easy! The secrets are few and the tools are many. Successful people, from the Bill Gates of the world right on down to the newest millionaire on the planet, are first, last and always good salespeople. They sell their stockholders, their bankers, their customers, their employees, and so forth every single business day. That is their business. Even one that comes up with some great idea and then earns a fortune from the idea, must first sell it to someone. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a light bulb or a satellite, ideas become reality only when they are sold to someone.
The first point that I would like to make should be obvious by now. Sales make the world go around! Selling is essential to success! If you want to really make money, you must sharpen your sales skills! You deserve to be prosperous, don’t deny that by marshaling up some silly statement like, “I’m just not a salesperson.”
Selling is Easy
I said earlier that selling is easy. You might ask, who are you to say that? That’s a fair question. After all, I am best known for my work in cognitive behavioral modification or thought technologies. However, I could offer several good reasons based only on my so-called expertise, such as the sales organizations that I have done work for or the Olympic players I have had a hand in motivating and so forth. I won’t take that approach. Straight up, I worked my way through school by selling. Wherever I went, I became the number one salesperson. I have sold everything from sewing machines door to door to entire businesses. I built my own business recognizing the importance of communication—SALES!
