What comes to mind when you think about writers? For the longest time, I thought about it only in the context of famous authors writing incredible fiction—sagas, fantasies, dramas, thrillers, etc.—or fascinating non-fiction—social psychology, memoirs and biographies, and thought-provoking self-empowerment. But the fact is we all write a whole lot more than we think we do.
Expresssing Ourselves
Writing can include love notes to our significant other, texting to family and friends, a diary that is top-secret as it contains our most innermost thoughts, creative copy for work, fliers for special charity functions we are involved in, little bits of poetry that express emotions, manuals, snippets of thoughts and ideas, epics, and everything in-between. Writing is a way that even the least artistic amongst us can use to be creative, and creativity adds a whole new dimension to the quality of life, bringing its own kind of magic to the experience of life.
Benefits of Writing
However, in addition to the creative aspects, there are also other real benefits that can come from writing:
- Creativity has been shown to have positive effects on health, self-esteem and vitality;
- Writing is good for the brain, putting you into a meditative state;
- Writing sharpens your powers of observation;
- Writing is a great way to practice concentration and focus;
- Writing connects you with others;
- Writing can be a great way to preserve stories and family history;
- Writing can be entertaining—for you and for others;
- Writing strengthens your imagination, and can open up worlds of possibilities;
- Writing can help to heal wounds and to process other negative emotions;
- And of course, writing can just be fun, and we can all do with more of that!1
