Then he spent the next ten minutes proving it.

He shared story after story about things he had forgotten, misplaced, or failed to remember. Names escaped him. Important details disappeared. He seemed genuinely convinced that having a poor memory was simply part of who he was. As I listened, I found myself becoming less interested in his memory and more interested in how often he repeated the story.

Eventually, I pointed out something he had never considered. Every time he told himself he had a bad memory, whether out loud or silently to himself, he was reinforcing that belief. In fact, when he met someone new, he was often so busy thinking, “I won’t remember this anyway,” that he wasn’t giving himself much chance to remember in the first place.

The following week he told me he had been making a conscious effort to stop repeating that story. To his surprise, he was already noticing improvements. Not only was his memory improving, but so was the way he felt about himself.

When Self-Description Becomes Self-Sabotage

What fascinated me about this conversation was that he did not see his behavior as self-sabotage. He thought he was simply being honest. After all, if he warned people that he had a poor memory, then he was protected if he forgot something later. No embarrassment. No disappointment. No uncomfortable explanations.

The belief served a purpose.

And that is often how self-sabotage works. Most of the time it does not look destructive. It looks practical. It looks reasonable. It looks like an honest assessment of who we are and what we are capable of achieving.

Many of us have our own version of this story. Perhaps it sounds like, “I’m not good with money,” or “I’ve never been disciplined.” Maybe it is, “I’m terrible at sales,” “I’m not very creative,” or “I’m just not one of those people.” Whatever form it takes, the danger is that what begins as an observation gradually becomes an instruction.

The subconscious mind listens to what we repeatedly tell it. Every time we reinforce a limitation, we make it a little more difficult to move beyond it.

The Stories We Don’t Know We’re Carrying

One of the challenges with self-sabotage is that it often remains hidden from view. Most people are not consciously thinking about how they may be getting in their own way. Instead, they are simply living their lives, making decisions, reacting to circumstances, and repeating familiar patterns without realizing that old conclusions may still be influencing them. Yet there are clues.

If you often feel there should be more to life than this… if you look back and wonder why certain opportunities never seemed to work out… if you find yourself facing the same frustrating challenges year after year… or if success always seems just slightly out of reach… then there is a good chance that self-sabotage is involved somewhere in the equation.

That does not mean there is something wrong with you. In fact, it means you are human. Every one of us carries limiting beliefs that were formed through experience, often long before we had the wisdom or perspective to challenge them. The problem is not that these beliefs exist. The problem is that they can continue shaping our choices long after they have outlived their usefulness.

Yesterday’s Experiences, Today’s Decisions

One of the things Eldon and I have discussed for years is the negativity bias of the subconscious mind. Our minds are remarkably good at remembering criticism, rejection, failure, embarrassment, and disappointment. These memories are stored away and frequently used as guidance for future decisions, even when those decisions have little to do with the original experience.

The challenge is that yesterday’s experiences are not always good predictors of tomorrow’s possibilities. Yet without realizing it, we can begin living as though they are. A critical teacher, a failed relationship, a business setback, or an embarrassing mistake can quietly become part of our identity. Once that happens, we stop questioning the story and begin living it. That is why I believe one of the most powerful realizations we can have is this: Yesterday’s protection can become today’s prison.

New Possibilities

The encouraging news is that these stories are not permanent. The gentleman I mentioned at the beginning of this newsletter did not improve his memory because he suddenly became a different person. He improved because he began questioning an assumption he had accepted as fact. That is where change often begins—not with some dramatic breakthrough, but with a willingness to ask whether the limitations we carry are actually true.

Over the years we have heard from people who finally gained the confidence to ask for a raise or promotion and received it. Others improved their businesses because they stopped expecting rejection before they even began a sales conversation. Some repaired relationships because they stopped assuming they would be criticized or misunderstood. Others finally gained control of their finances after years of believing they simply weren’t good with money.

We’ve heard from people who lost weight after decades of struggle, students who passed important exams, and individuals who found themselves healthier and more resilient than they had believed possible.

The common thread is not luck. The common thread is that they stopped reinforcing the limitations they had accepted as facts.

Creating a Different Future

The Eliminating Self-Sabotage album was compiled to address many of these hidden beliefs and emotional patterns—the ones that can quietly influence confidence, success, relationships, prosperity, and personal fulfillment.

The collection contains 9 complete programs utilizing multiple InnerTalk technologies including InnerTalk®, OZO, Echo-Tech, and Power Imaging. Yesterday’s protections do not have to become today’s prison.

Warmly,

Ravinder Taylor

What if some of the limitations you accept as facts are actually stories you’ve been repeating for years?
