Nothing particularly terrible is happening. We’re getting through our days, taking care of the things that need to be done, dealing with the inevitable challenges and perhaps enjoying some good moments along the way.

But I’ve been thinking about that word fine. There is a difference between having nothing particularly wrong with your life and having something wonderfully right with it.

When “Fine” Becomes the Baseline

We tend to notice dramatic changes in the way we feel. If something devastating happens, we know we’re unhappy. If something wonderful happens, we know we’re happy.

The smaller changes can be much harder to see. Enthusiasm can fade gradually. We stop looking forward to things quite as much. Curiosity diminishes. We laugh a little less. We become more cautious about expecting good things. Life fills up with responsibilities and routines, and somewhere along the way we can become very good at functioning without noticing that we aren’t really enjoying ourselves as much as we once did.

Nothing is wrong exactly, but something is missing. And perhaps because the change happened so gradually, we adjusted our expectations to match it. What once would have felt flat simply begins to feel normal.

Happiness Isn’t the Goal

I don’t think we’re supposed to feel happy all the time. In fact, I wouldn’t want to.

When we truly care about things, life is sometimes going to hurt. I have often said that pain and grief are simply the other side of love. If you hadn’t loved as much, you wouldn’t be dealing with so much grief. But would you really have preferred not to have loved in the first place? I wouldn’t.

The same is true of many emotions we tend to label “negative.” Fear can warn us. Anger can tell us that something important has been violated. Disappointment exists because we hoped for something. Sadness gives us space to acknowledge loss.

A rich emotional life isn’t one from which we’ve eliminated all the uncomfortable emotions. It’s one in which we care enough to feel deeply, allow ourselves to experience what is real, and then allow ourselves to come out the other side.

The Problem With Chasing Happiness

There is another reason I don’t think permanent happiness is a particularly realistic goal. We adapt.

Something we once dreamed about happens and we’re thrilled. Then we live with it for a while and it becomes part of everyday life. The extraordinary gradually becomes ordinary. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s simply part of being human.

So perhaps happiness isn’t really a destination we can reach and remain in permanently. I think there is something quieter — and perhaps more sustainable — underneath it: serenity.

Serenity isn’t the absence of excitement, indifference, or a life in which nothing matters enough to disturb us. I think of it more as having a place of emotional balance to return to.

From there, we can still experience great joy. We can become excited. We can feel passionate about something we’re doing. We can laugh until our sides hurt and look forward to tomorrow. And when life hurts, we can grieve, become angry, feel disappointed or frightened without believing that those emotions have to become our permanent home.

Perhaps the goal isn’t permanent happiness at all. Perhaps the goal is emotional richness.

When Did You Stop Expecting Life to Feel Good?

That question has stayed with me. Not Is anything terribly wrong? Not even Are you unhappy? But when did you stop expecting life to feel good?

Sometimes the answer may be, I haven’t. Wonderful.

But sometimes we may realize that we have quietly surrendered things we didn’t actually have to surrender: optimism, enthusiasm, curiosity, connection, peace, the expectation that something good might happen, even the simple pleasure of looking forward to something.

We may tell ourselves we’re simply being realistic. Perhaps life has disappointed us often enough that expecting less feels safer. There can be a kind of emotional protection in pessimism: if we don’t expect something good to happen, perhaps we can’t be disappointed when it doesn’t.

But protection usually comes with a price. When we stop expecting good things, we may also become less likely to look for them, recognize them, appreciate them or act on the possibilities that are already around us.

There is a difference between accepting reality and allowing yesterday’s disappointments to decide what we expect from tomorrow.

Don’t let protecting yourself from disappointment make you unavailable for delight.

What We Rehearse Matters

Our emotional lives are complicated. Our thoughts aren’t the only things that influence how we feel, and I would never suggest that someone experiencing serious or persistent emotional distress can simply “think positive” and make it disappear.

But the way we habitually talk to ourselves does matter. Thoughts such as “Nothing ever works out,” “What’s the point?” “I always have something to worry about,” or “Things aren’t going to get any better” can become so familiar that we stop recognizing them as interpretations. They begin to sound like facts.

And because those thoughts can influence what we expect, notice and do, they can help maintain the very emotional environment from which they arose.

This is one of the reasons we developed InnerTalk: to work with the habitual inner dialogue and beliefs that can influence the way we experience ourselves and our lives. Not to convince ourselves that everything is wonderful when it isn’t, but to make sure we’re not unconsciously convincing ourselves that nothing can be.

More Than “Overcoming the Blues”

Looking again at our Overcoming the Blues album recently, something struck me. The name emphasizes what we want to move away from, but when I look at the programs we compiled for it, I see something much larger.

There is Stress Free, Personal Peace, Freedom from Fears, and Resolving Feelings of Loneliness and Isolation. There is Optimism Plus, Boundless Joy and On Fire with a Passion for Life. And ultimately, there is Serenity.

Suddenly, I don’t see a collection simply about overcoming a bad mood. I see many of the qualities that can contribute to an emotionally rich life.

And I particularly like where that journey ends. Not with perpetual excitement, but with serenity.

Yet serenity doesn’t mean that nothing ever knocks us off balance. Life will see to that. We will experience disappointments, losses, unexpected changes and circumstances we would never have chosen.

Perhaps real serenity has less to do with never being disturbed and more to do with having a place of emotional balance to return to. Serenity isn’t never being knocked off balance. Resilience is knowing you can find your balance again.

And that is why I think these different qualities belong together. Reducing stress, working through unnecessary fears, strengthening optimism, reconnecting with other people, rediscovering joy and enthusiasm — each can contribute something to the emotional environment from which resilience grows and to which we can return.

Finding Your Way Back

If you’ve been feeling discouraged, flat, stressed or simply less enthusiastic about life than you once were, you don’t have to pretend everything is wonderful. Maybe something genuinely difficult is happening, and you need to give yourself permission to feel it.

But perhaps it’s also worth asking whether some of the joy, optimism, enthusiasm or peace that has disappeared really needed to disappear with it. Or perhaps nothing particularly bad happened at all. Maybe fine just gradually became good enough.

Our Overcoming the Blues album was compiled to support change from several different directions because emotional well-being isn’t one-dimensional. Its nine programs address stress, fear, loneliness, low mood, optimism, peace, joy, enthusiasm and serenity through five different InnerTalk approaches.

The objective isn’t to persuade yourself that life is wonderful. It’s to stop unnecessarily closing the door on everything that could be wonderful about it.

Special Offer — Overcoming the Blues + Developing Resilience

For a limited time, we’re offering the complete Overcoming the Blues album for

$99 — MP3 Download

$119 — Physical CDs

And because being emotionally healthy doesn’t mean that life will never knock us off balance, we’re also including Developing Resilience as a free bonus.

I think Developing Resilience is an especially appropriate companion to this collection.
