It might be a painting, a melody, a story, or a beautiful garden. It might be a new business idea, a better way to organize your day, an unexpected solution to a problem around the house, or finally figuring out how to make some new piece of technology work for you rather than against you. Whatever form it takes, there is a special moment when you can look at something and realize, “That came from my mind.”

We spend an enormous amount of time consuming information—reading, watching, scrolling, listening. But creative thinking asks the brain to do something with information: connect it, question it, rearrange it, imagine alternatives, and solve something new.

There’s an important difference between filling the mind and exercising it. And perhaps an equally important difference between simply moving through life and continuing to be fascinated by what we might still create within it.

Creativity Belongs Everywhere

I love the traditional forms of creativity. I’ve always enjoyed music, drawing, and writing, and there is something immensely satisfying about beginning with an idea and gradually turning it into something real.

But the same creative process happens in places we don’t always recognize.

A businessperson looks at an old problem and sees a new opportunity. A parent invents a game that turns an unpleasant chore into fun. Someone rearranges a room and suddenly the whole space works better. Two people struggling to communicate finally find a different way of explaining what they mean. And someone confronted with yet another piece of rapidly changing technology stops thinking, “Why did they have to change this again?” and starts wondering, “Okay, what can I do with it?”

Creative thinking makes us more adaptable and resourceful, but I think it does something else as well. It makes life more interesting.

Instead of simply accepting what is in front of us, we begin playing with possibilities. We ask why?, why not?, what if?, and what else could work? We experiment. We imagine. Sometimes we make mistakes and start again. Sometimes an idea that initially seemed slightly ridiculous turns out to be exactly what we needed.

Life becomes a little more three-dimensional when we’re actively participating in it rather than simply responding to whatever comes our way.

And Your Brain Loves the Challenge

While all of this is making life more useful, interesting, and fun, something else may be happening too.

As I was researching Mind Training, I became fascinated by a remarkable research project known as the Nun Study. Researchers followed a group of Catholic sisters as they aged, studying their cognitive abilities and eventually, with permission, examining their brains after death.

One of the extraordinary findings was that what researchers found physically in the brain did not always correspond with what they had observed in the person during life. Some women showed significant Alzheimer’s-related changes in their brains despite having remained remarkably functional. I find that amazing.

Researchers use terms such as cognitive reserve and cognitive resilience to help explain how the brain can sometimes continue functioning despite age- or disease-related changes. The Nun Study offers compelling support for the idea that a lifetime of learning, mental activity, problem solving, and engagement can help build resources the brain may draw upon as it ages.

Think about what that means. When we challenge our minds today, the immediate reward may be a new idea, a solved problem, a beautiful creation, or simply that wonderful feeling of “I figured it out!” But the benefits of keeping our minds active, curious, and engaged may reach much further into our lives.

Curiosity Keeps Us Young

I don’t ever want to reach an age where I decide I’ve learned enough. There will always be another idea to explore, another problem to solve, another technology for me to complain about—and eventually learn!—another book to read, another question to ask.

Curiosity doesn’t have an expiration date. In fact, I think curiosity is one of the keys to staying young. Not because it changes the number of candles on our birthday cake, but because curious people remain engaged with life. They’re still learning, experimenting, wondering, discovering, and looking forward to whatever comes next.

Creative thinking is wonderful exercise for the mind, but it gives us something else as well: that marvelous sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something, solving something, or suddenly seeing a possibility we couldn’t see before.

Perhaps staying young has something to do with that too. There is something wonderfully youthful about still being excited by an idea, still wanting to learn, still wanting to make something better, and still wondering what’s around the next corner.

Sometimes It Only Takes One Idea

Sometimes creativity does more than make everyday life easier or more interesting. Sometimes one idea can open a door we never imagined would open.

One of our customers shared this extraordinary experience:

“I listened to your Creativity recording and prayed to allow the messages to be absorbed into my subconscious. Three months later I was in Washington, D.C., presenting my paintings to President George Bush and being honored. It was a dream come true. Thank you.”
~ R. A. J.

I love this story. Not because any program can promise where a creative idea will lead—no one can—but because it reminds us just how extraordinary the possibilities can sometimes be when creativity, talent, opportunity, and belief come together.

Most of our creative moments won’t take us to the White House. They may simply help us write a better paragraph, solve a stubborn problem, create something beautiful, discover a new approach at work, communicate more effectively with someone we love, or finally figure out that piece of technology that was driving us crazy.

But that’s part of what makes creativity so exciting. We don’t always know where the next idea might lead.

Strengthening Creative Thinking

Our Creative Thinking album was compiled to focus on one particularly fascinating group of abilities: imagination, intuition, visualization, questioning assumptions, exploring alternatives, creative expression, and breakthrough thinking.

It isn’t simply about putting more information into your mind.
