Bio-circuits
are here
Two researchers from the Max Plank Institute in Germany have accomplished
the first actual combination of living neurons and transistors organized
to carry out bio-circuitry needs. Peter Fromherz and Gunther Zeck patterned
transistors onto a silicon wafer and placed snail neurons onto the surface,
then immersed the wafer in a biological brew. The researchers describe
the snail neuron circuit in the Aug. 28 Proceedings of the national
Academy of Sciences. (Weiss 2001)
A
new twist on aromatherapy
Japan's National Space Development Agency (NASDA) has commissioned
a Japanese firm to develop a fragrance that would lower stress levels
for astronauts in space. The current front running fragrance was tested
on student volunteers. Stress hormones were reduced in volunteers that
breathed or tasted the substance dimethoxymethyibenzene (DMMB). The
cosmetic company, Shiseido, now must convert the benefits of the substance
to something like chewing gum so space air filters do not become clogged.
