InnerTalk® -InTouchTM Newsletter News Briefs /Further Explorations Into the Mind Vol. 1 No. 11 November 28, 2000 Growing Gray Matter New research shows that lithium, the antidepressant that revolutionized the psychiatric treatment of manic depression by stabling mood swings, increases gray matter in the brain. (Gray matter is the so-called thinking stuff of the brain). After four weeks of use, 8 out of 10 subjects receiving lithium were shown to have increases in brain gray matter equivalent to approximately 3%, according to a study reported in the October Lancet by researchers Husseini K. Manji and Gregory J. Moore. This work together with the results of related studies has led some scientists to speculate that depression may stem from the death of cells and the brains inability to naturally replace them. [Travis, 2000 #7] It might be interesting to think of lithium as holding other possibilities aside from strictly a pharmaceutical intervention. For example, what would be the result of an accelerated learning environment if lithium were given the subjects? Could lithium promote a normalizing effect with autistic subjects? How long does the 3% increase last? Does it accumulate? Is there a benefit to be gained by exciting the gray matter, to use the words of PET people, by combining an enhanced learning activity or cortical electrical stimulation with lithium therapy? More to come on this, of that you can be sure. Reference
