Do you ever feel lonely? I tend to think that everyone experiences these feelings at some time or another, but for some people feelings of loneliness and isolation are common—even normal.
Sadness
Loneliness is the state of being alone and feeling sad about it. However, feelings of loneliness are not only caused by a lack of social connections, as it is perfectly possible to feel lonely even while you are in a crowd, or surrounded by family and friends. The solution to loneliness therefore does not simply entail being with other people, but finding ways to connect with yourself and others on a more emotional level.
Types of Loneliness
According to Psychology Today, there are 7 types of loneliness:
- New-situation—such as starting a new job or going to a new school
- I’m different—not quite connecting with those around you perhaps due to different beliefs or life philosophies.
- No sweetheart—not being in a relationship, getting over a break up, or even being in a relationship but not feeling the deep connection that you want.
- No animal—some people only feel ‘whole’ when they have a close animal friend.
- No time for me—when you have acquaintances but no real friends.
- Untrustworthy friends—when you don’t quite trust the friends that you have and have no one you feel comfortable confiding in.
- Quiet presence loneliness—not having someone else around at home.1
Health Issues
Overcoming feelings of loneliness and isolation is really important as, if left undealt with, they can impact your health in a myriad of ways, including:
- Depression and suicide
- Cardiovascular disease and stroke
- Increased stress levels
- Decreased memory and learning
- Antisocial behavior
- Poor decision-making
- Alcoholism and drug abuse
- The progression of Alzheimer’s disease
- Altered brain function2

- Echo-Tech End Codependent Patterns is an important element in dealing with loneliness. Discover your own inner strength and belief in yourself.
- Power Imaging Well Being and Esteem is a guided imagery (hypnosis) program that will lead you to your own inner sanctuary and assist you in discovering both the cause of your issue and the solution.
