How many years has it been now, since the arrival of warmer weather has inspired you to renew your commitment to get fit and healthy? Surely it should be easier now that the weather is nice and you can get outside. Think of all the walking, biking, hiking, running and/or sports you can do. It can’t even feel like exercise if you are having fun, so getting fit and trim should be easy . . . no? Most people make the commitment to get fit, drop a few pounds or simply to become more active. Unfortunately, most people reach the end of the warmer weather, still no closer to their goals. Why is this?
The first thing of course has to be mental attitude? We are simply conditioned to think of exercise as a bad thing, something we ‘have’ to do or just get through, something that takes us away from the things we would rather do, etc. As I have often said, if your thoughts about a goal are negative, then you have severely hampered your chances of being successful—and this is particularly obvious when it comes to exercise of any kind. Often times the thought that you should go and do some exercise will be replaced by thoughts such as, “I’ll do it tomorrow. Taking one day off won’t hurt. Surely relaxing in the sunshine is good for me too,” etc. Or perhaps you find yourself in the midst of some exercise activity and you feel hot, sticky, uncomfortable in some way so you simply quit.
I can certainly relate to negative, self-sabotaging thoughts during exercise as I experienced exactly this when I first took up running again after not having done any for at least 3 decades. Early on in the run my mind would be full of thoughts along the lines of, “Why the heck am I doing this? This is simply boring. There are so many other things I would rather do!” etc. And when you have these kinds of thoughts racing through you mind, it can be hard to think about how nice it will be to succeed, both in the goal of running and also in the weight loss and fitness gained as a result. When I first started running, the InnerTalk Running program was simply indispensable. Playing this program while I ran kept my thoughts on “I am confident. I run regularly. I love being fit. I am proud of myself. I schedule my running. I make time to run. I follow through. I am systematic. I am motivated to run. I love life,” etc. I am really glad that Eldon and I have managed to stick with a running schedule. We went out for a run just this morning—the air was fresh and clean, the sun was bright, and now that we are back in the office, I feel energized and enthused for the day!
The second problem that interferes with our fitness goals has to do with habits. We already have the habit of not exercising, perhaps of being couch potatoes or perhaps we just have too many other things that have to be done. One of the things I have learned is that if you can create a good strong habit related to exercise, then you will be so much more successful. If you inner voice keeps telling you that you enjoy being active, that you find it easy to schedule time for your activity, that you love being fit and healthy, etc., then creating the deep seated exercise habit becomes easy.
