Today I want to share a funny story with you about Eldon! But first, let me give you some background. As you know, Eldon and I are strong believers in staying as young and healthy as possible for as long as possible, and Eldon has focused a fair bit of research searching for ways that we can achieve this. Back in the 90s, he prepared a paper that he had planned to give in Israel on Memory Dependent Wellness. The paper covered lots of different areas, and ended up spawning the creation of Eldon’s Forever Young album. Included in this album is a booklet that is full of some fascinating information regarding the aging process and how you can influence it; but for now, let me just share this quote with you:
“Our memory and expectation both play large roles in how we age. Dr. Ellen Langer of Harvard University demonstrated this years ago when she took a group of older people to a cabin in the woods, where they were separated from everything modern. Indeed, they were surrounded with magazines, music, automobiles, and more—all from the circa vintage of their early twenties. When the week was over and the subjects were returned, they were post-tested for length of gait and more. By every measurable means, they had reversed their aging process and were leaving the cabin younger than when they arrived!”
As I said, Eldon shares lots of different ways you can influence how you age, and he has created a number of InnerTalk programs to support this process. Eldon and I use this information and the programs on a very regular basis, and people are always guessing him to be around 20 years younger than he is—and a super healthy version of that younger person too! And I am not doing too badly myself.
Subliminal Research
Last week, twenty years after Eldon first wrote that paper, we heard of a study by Becca R. Levy of Yale University et al that had just been published on Subliminal Strengthening. The abstract states:
“Negative age stereotypes that older individuals assimilate from their culture predict detrimental outcomes, including worse physical function. We examined, for the first time, whether positive age stereotypes, presented subliminally across multiple sessions in the community, would lead to improved outcomes.”
So the study starts with the fact that negative ideas about the aging process will cause you to age faster, and then tests were run to see if positive subliminal messages regarding aging could reverse this. In this study a group of 100 individuals, ranging from 61-99 years of age, were assigned to three groups. What they found was:
“Individuals exposed to the positive messaging exhibited a range of psychological and physical improvements that were not found in control subjects. They benefited from improved physical function, such as physical balance, which continued for three weeks after the intervention ended. Also, during the same period, positive age stereotypes and positive self-perceptions of aging were strengthened, and negative age stereotypes and negative self-perceptions of aging were weakened.” 1
Even though Eldon could have saved them the time and told them the answer 20 years ago, it was still cool to hear of a study at prestigious universities that once again proved him right! And you can also see why Eldon and I use the programs in our Forever Young album on an ongoing basis. The fact is, we do not live in nice sterile bubbles—and it is easy for negative information to overtake us, unless we make a conscious effort to balance the programming in our subconscious minds.
Running
So what was the funny story? Well, as you know, Eldon and I took up running a few years ago. When you have not run for many decades, running is very challenging. Fortunately, we found a training program that starts off very slow. From the beginning, Eldon has played music while we ran—just whatever music he felt like at the time—but I don’t like to use headphones, and the music I prefer is just not conducive to running. At first the running was both hard and boring—there were so many other things I would have preferred to do. As such, I ended up playing Eldon’s InnerTalk program for Running. With affirmations such as, “I like exercise. I like running. Running feels good. Running gives me a rush. Running is good for me. I pace myself. I care for my body. My body is strong and healthy. I love my body,” I soon got through the initial blocks I had and now I love to run.
Long distance running is all about pacing yourself and not going too fast, especially in the beginning of each run. Sometimes, Eldon and I run so slowly that we make a joke out of it—almost dancing along with our shoulders back, arms relaxed and heads held high. However, last week Eldon changed the music he was running to and the change in his body language was incredible. As my phone app chimed to tell us to start running, rather than delaying and starting slowly as Eldon normally does, you would have thought he was back in high school and about to compete in a state championship again—his shoulders dropped immediately and his elbows swung back to put all of his energy into pumping his legs as he took off! And what was the music he chose to play? Just his favorite music from his high school days! Eldon’s own teachings on the power to reverse the aging process were demonstrated in full-blown Technicolor, and it was a great thing to see. Muscle memory at work!

The Science of InnerTalk
Remember, InnerTalk has been researched at numerous independent universities and institutions (such as Stanford University), and been demonstrated effective at priming how you speak to yourself. When your self-talk changes, so does the reality you experience!
“My hair is thicker. My skin looks younger. I have a younger attitude. I play on the slide with my grandchild. I even chased a robber down the street! “
